Professor Tomislav Cvitaš has been awarded the status of Emeritus Fellow in Division I. This 2020 appointment reflects his standing as a scientist and continuing service to the division and to the Union.
Tomislav Cvitaš (Croatia), born in 1943, has been professor of physical chemistry at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Zagreb since 1977, where is now Professor Emeritus (from 2015). His scientific work in the fields of molecular spectroscopy and atmospheric chemistry is internationally recognized and highly cited. He has written several educational articles and textbooks for high schools.
Prof. Cvitaš has contributed significantly to the development of chemical science and higher education in Croatia with his scientific, teaching, and social activities within the chemical profession. He has received prominent awards and recognitions for his contributions to science and higher education including the State Award for the Promotion and Popularization of Science (2001) and an IUPAC plaque in appreciation of his outstanding contributions to the advancement of worldwide chemistry (2003). His academic achievements were recognized in 2018 by his election as Fellow of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
Professor Cvitaš’ activity related to IUPAC stemmed from his interest in introducing quantity calculus in chemistry. A long-time member of IUPAC, Prof. Cvitaš served as President of the Physical Chemistry Division in 1998-1999 and as Chairman of the Interdivisional Committee on Terminology, Nomenclature and Symbols (ICTNS) in 2000-2001. He is a co-author of the first, second, and third editions of the IUPAC Green Book (Quantities, Units, and Symbols in Physical Chemistry), which was translated to seven languages, and is one of the most successful publications of IUPAC.
