IUPAC FAIR Chemistry updates

The WorldFAIR Chemistry project is reporting noticeable progress this month. In addition, the task group is inviting participation and contribution in up-coming events.

The FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles provide a framework for sharing data broadly and accurately that is interoperable and reusable for diverse use cases and sharing research data that align with the FAIR Data Principles is increasingly expected by funding agencies. CODATA and the Research Data Alliance have recently launched the WorldFAIR Initiative to advance implementation of the FAIR data principles within and across research domains. IUPAC is leading the WorldFAIR Chemistry project in a concerted effort through collaboration with related disciplines and data science communities to support broader data sharing of chemical data. The goal of WorldFAIR Chemistry is to support the use of chemical data standards in research workflows to support data sharing and reuse through practical resources. Our goal for the workshop is to engage the input and expertise of the chemistry community and provide feedback on prototype services in development.

March 2023 updates:

The IUPAC FAIR Chemistry Cookbook sampler – a resource to support the broader community in using standards to implement the FAIR data principles for chemical data –  has been released. As strategies for implementing FAIR evolve and the sharing and reuse of FAIR chemical data continues to rise, the Cookbook is an online platform developed to be a living and expanding resource. The overall goal is to get practical tools & tips in the hands of practicing chemists and those who support them to lower barriers and smooth the adoption of best practices for sharing and re-using FAIR chemical data.

A new service prototype for supporting standard programmatic chemical data exchange and validation is also now available through the IUPAC FAIR Chemistry Protocol Services projectThe services are intended to confirm chemical identity and provide real-time feedback on the machine-readability of chemical data and metadata representation based on IUPAC standard rule sets and community best practices. To engage community input, a conceptual framework and demo prototype (for demonstration only) is made available via https://iupac.github.io/WFChemProtocols.
